What can be accomplished by making a valid will?

By making a valid will you accomplish the following:

1. You decide how should your property be distributed after your death. You, and not the courts, choose who will receive what. You can leave all your assets to one person, as for example your spouse, or you can leave specific gifts to particular persons and/or organizations. You can even disinherit someone if you so wish. Also, you can designate alternates, second choice beneficiaries. This provides for the situation when your first choice predeceases you.

2. You appoint a person whom you trust as personal guardian of your minor children.

3. You appoint a custodian, trustee, or property guardian to manage the property you leave to minor children, or property they may receive from other sources.

4. You appoint the executor of your will: the person or institution you trust and want to be in charge of distributing your property according to your will. See the list of provisions included in the last wills prepared by LegalArrow®.
