Who needs a will?
It is safe to say, and most experts would agree, that
everyone needs a will. Contrary to what some believe, a will is
not only for the rich. No matter what the value of your property
is, you want to ensure that it will go to who you wish upon your
death: your family, your friends or your preferred charities.
Without a valid will, you leave it to the courts and the state
to decide who will receive your property. And it is very
unlikely that the distribution of your property made by the
courts will reflect your wishes.
Furthermore, if you have minor children, a will is
particularly important. In a will you can designate a person
whom you trust to take on the role of guardian for your minor
children. By doing so, you ensure that your minor children will
receive proper care should you become unavailable.
